About the site --- The site is important from religious as well as geographical point of view. As imagined in the hindu religion philosophy originally this place was part of sea and this was the place where lord Vishnu used to rest under the sea on the floating bed of Sheshnag. As the story goes in Markandey Puran or Durga sapt sati. Two demons Madhu and Katav were born out of ear wame place of pilgrimage and worship.
Another case of mythological or pauranic story is the physical prenceaste of Vishnu. These demons startedharassing Brahama and other gods. They all went to Vishnu and prayed for destruction of Madhu and Katav . There was no difficulty in winning over to Katav. But Madhu was magic wizard who even after geting his neck cut used to harass smaller gods.

So lord Vishnu meditated to call a hill body called Mandar hill. After martially defeating Madhu the lord pressed his body with Mandar hill. Thus he became “Madhusudan" and Mandar hill near Baunsi bec of a big conch (Sankh) in a tank on the geographical profile on top of the Mandar hill. Although king Bali belonged to demon dynasty but his nature and behavour were good to others . His bravery and alms donation were loved by the supreme god too. As religious stories go deities of human being becomes envious to such persons. So became the case with king Bali. He was instigated with the idea of becoming immortal like deities by drinking nectar which will come out of sea after churning these a Brave but simple demon king was convinced with cheating idea of deities . It was decided Bali will drink nectar to become immortal and other gems and valuables will be taken and distributed among deities .Mandarachal hill was only hill at that time suitable to churn the sea up to the bottom .So both the parties went there and tried to uproot it and bring it into the sea for that purpose. But they utterly failed, what to say of derooting. They could not even got it displaced for a length of needle point. Then both the parties jointly prayed Lord Vishnu to fullfil their desire. Then almighty"s driver egale (Garur) of the chariot of almighty was sent to Mandar. It got the hill on his seat and brought it to the sea. Similarly snake Basuki was made rope. It was caught in one side by the deities on one side end by demons Thus by to and fro movements of both the parties the churning of the sea was done.

This awesome isolated, singular boulder hill appears as a gigantic monolith rising at a height of 700' is aptly connected with a popular mythical tale of immortality in Hindu Puranas.
Close to the Vidyapeeth railway station, about 50 km. from the main city of Bhagalpur, Mandar hill is a sacred destination to Jains and Hindus both. At the base of the hill a large tank having a Vishnu temple at the centre with a lotus structure is built in the recent past. In the memory of the 12th Jain Tirthankara Vasupujya who attained nirvana here, a temple is built on top of this hill. On the way to the top an astounding lake settled at the niche of the black rock is absolutely startling.
The mythological tale of Hindus describes this hill as Sumeru Parvat, the churning pole of Amrit Manthan (Nectar of Immortality) with the winding 'Naag' (the Great Snake). The patterns that are visible on the rock is believed to have created by the mythical Great Snake while the churning took place between the Devs and Asuras. The Baunsi annual fair is a popular one to draw a lot of tourists at the place.

It is about 700 ft high and approximately 45 km south of Bhagalpur city. The mountain is famous as Mandar Hill. Mandar Hill is a great place of pilgrimage although it is not so well known now. On top of the hill there are two temple side by side belonging to Hinduism and Jainism followers.
The mountain has many references in hindu mythology known as mandarachal parvat. As per references found from Puranas and Mahabharata this hill was used for churning the ocean to extract the nectar from its bosom (Samudra Manthan).
There is, adjacent to this hill, a pond called "Paapharni". This holy pond has its own historical significance. It is a place where you can revive yourself after taking a bath in the pond that refreshes mentally and physically. In the middle of the pond is a temple of lord Vishnu and goddess Laxmi.
Mandar Hill Mountain lied in a small village Bounsi, District - Banka in State - Bihar. There are a holy faith about the Mandar Hill is that in our past "SAMUNDRA MANTHAN" is done by this mountain."SAMUNDRA MANTHAN" which is done after a fight between "DEVTA" & "DANAV". By this Samundra Manthan we get many things such as "COW", "POISSON", "AMRIT", "NEELKANTH BIRD" and many more. This Poisson had drunk by "LORD SHIV JI" and the AMRIT is distributed in all of the DEVTAS.
Mandar hill is extremely sacred in the Hindu Mythology. The Skanda Purana records the history of the famous Amrit Manthan ( the churning of the ocean ). Due to this mythical association, the hill has assumed considerable religious significance and had been a place of pilgrimage up till now.
The Mandar Mahatmya, a portion of the Skanda Purana, describes Mandar Hill. It is said that Raja Chhatra Sen of the Chol tribe, who lived before the time of the Muhammadans, erected the oldest temples at the summit. Some of the carvings on the rocks are taken by some to be shell writings. Mandar Hill is also very important as it has the unique image of Vishnu, probably the only sculpture in Bihar where Vishnu, in his man-lion incarnation, has not been shown as tearing Hiranyakashipu. The portrait is 34 inches high and made of black stone. It belongs to the Gupta period.

An inscription of Gupta King Adityasena has been discovered on the 'Mandar Hill. This inscription relates that both he and his queen Sri Konda Devi had installed an image of Narahari (Man-lion), an incarnation of Vishnu, on the hill, and that the queen performed an act of piety by excavating a tank, known as Papa Harini, at the foot of the said hill. Papa Harini was also known as Manohar Kund.
In the memory of the 12th Jain Tirthankara Vasupujya who attained nirvana here, a Jain temple is also built on top of this hill.
In the Center of "PAPHARNI" The Holy POND there is a temple of Lord "VISHNU". About the "PAPHARNI POND" there is a mythology that if anyone once take a bath in this pond then there's all of the PAP will be ended. That's why this pond named as "PAPHARNI".
